If the item is brand new, unused, and still has the original tags on it, and if you can show the merchant that it was broken or defective from the start, you can ask to have it repaired or exchanged for a new one. At least you can try. Go back as early as possible to the store and talk with them about an exchange or repair. However, if a repair is required, it could take time. Check to see if the store would be willing to mail the item internationally to your home, and what the cost to do so would be.
If you are unable to get the item repaired or exchanged, you can try to cancel the contract of sale and get your money back.
